Sound

Standard

Beep, beep, honk, honk
vrrrrrmmmmm
whispers of voices
all sounds infiltrating
within city streets
whir, whir, wehow, wehow
wooonnnng
lighted vehicles rushing
as they help restore calm
break the pattern
Beep, beep, honk, honk
vrrrrrmmmmm
gently murmuring
in the background
do we even hear?

Station

Standard

announcements made
streaming over speakers
telling information
for the travelers there
arranging their day
based on schedules
arriving only
to depart shortly
destinations vary
means of transport
fast or slow
provide avenues
places filled with
people experiencing
things together
or separate
whether brief or extensive
the span of time
in between meetings
doesn’t cease
emotions given
as one departs
or arrives
each station
is only a part
of a journey

Concert

Standard

standing in front
looking up
mesmerized, intrigued
it was a surprise
unexpected in every way
moving me emotionally
physically, intellectually
dancing with each note
completely thrilled
seeing excitement
music unheard
filled my ears
people unknown
undeniably kind
caring for their audience
through entertainment
along with compassion
leaving only appreciation
for the experience to behold
that never became old

Night

Standard

fell into the night
drifting as the workday ends
rushing to the next event
a plethora of choices
home with the family
short gatherings of friends
soon dinner for the evening
becomes enmeshed requiring
preparations for gatherings
whether within ones own walls
or another’s abode
available as they are
restaurants also provide
entertainment of plenty
familial or professional
adds to the evening
when shades of blue and gray
morph gloriously into
glistening speckled black skies
illuminating every night
for all to view

Invisibility Interwoven

Standard

there are people
we don’t know
they roam this world
living in similar ways
their productive actions
help us indiscreetly
as my daily movements
align with their needs
though connections
we hold supporting
each other
invisible even
amongst themselves
as the slinky
springs around
passing knowledge
resources, compassion
seemingly worlds apart
are brought together
from the initial pull
of the complied reactions
they first produced
bring together
people who have
never met

Woods

Standard

Trees surrounded
with underbrush
though deep inside
the forest center
branches make shelter
from sun, wind,
and drops of water
protecting the lot
void of all terror
a kind place to be
for you are never
alone shall the crisp air
guarantees to bring
moss forward
stunning all to see
columns of plenty
doubles as obstacles
along with landmarks
tall they stand
sturdy in their roots
spreading their seed
evolved from companionship
of the world around
the woods
lasting storms
of extreme weather
their duplicity, strength
enhance endurance
created within the trees

Talk

Standard

jitter jabber
over miles of matter
chatter clabber
empty air is your fare
babble dabble
sounds such a battle
vernacular spectacular
no secrets in fact here
discuss fussy muss
spit it out is a must
scrimptions of fiction
stories in the kitchen
gossips mess-ups
operator brings pop ups
mention diction
you have some fiction
verbiage spoilage
not these pages
imply reply
a brief  bye-bye

The Note

Standard

found a note
from one to another
crumpled, tattered
lying scrunched
with a dirt crust
someone had used it
as the path they walked
picked it up gingerly
noticed inside words
written in red
X452QJM
don’t forget
heavily underlined
what did it mean?
whose was it?
bold in its lettering
sounds important
though here it is
on the ground
will anyone see?

-Jennie Nawrocki

Jump

Standard

a touch of the hand
gently across the bare chest
stroking it along the way
feeling every curve
up to the shoulder
down the strong arm
looking at the sculpture
while moistening lips
in anticipation for a kiss
first on each cheek
slowly brushing
the softness of their faces
she whispers in her ear
let me jump your bones
