False Security

Standard

make shift shelter
of cloth and thread
big enough to wrap around
soft enough to comfort
protection from the cold
a barrier from the hard
cradle for all transport
a bit of safety brought
among the unknown
letting go of its hold
only builds the soul

Storm

Standard

dat, dop, dap
the umbrella sings
plop, plip, plap
the puddles speak
swoosh. splash, swish
water screams through wheels
wrow, weer, whow
stream flowing gutter stories
eep, beep, seep
birds bellow its silence

-Jennie Nawrocki

Luck

Standard

drowns the good
tears apart
beats a person down
definitely not in your favor
feelings of lost
hammers drive pain
everything gone

drowns the bad
mends bridges
builds you up
unsolicited goodness occurs
spreading true love
happiness repeats
having everything in need

-Jennie Nawrocki

Free

Standard

extremist we were
set in our ways
possibilities of changing
an idea, thoughts unexpressed
emboldened sparks within
shattering barriers
of colors so rigid
meeting in the middle
together building
acceptance towards actions
free of deception
along with malformed humor
plain goodness created
from us listening and learning

Welcome

Standard

a city so calm
relaxed is the atmosphere
where you are from, doesn’t matter
where you are going, need not worry
stay and rest
talk if you want or don’t
we don’t mind
hunger or thirsty, we’ll quench that
there is plenty to eat, so rest your feet
accept my hospitality, this is our home

City Block

Standard

along the way she gathered thoughts
gazing at the buildings disappearing behind her
store fronts filled with hopeful commerce
displayed eloquently glimmering new
people determined to find quality
inspect products for defects
others sit surrounded by food and drink
as the moment allows for relaxation
creatures await wide-eyed for morsels left
while hopefully dodging from being viewed
cars at different speeds roll down the guided pavement
interacting with walkers just like me
it is just a block from here to there
though history developed in this one square

Happy Ending

Standard

guru talks wellness of being
monk silently shows compassion
preachers give sermons of love
philosophers question anger
sage speaks of wisdom
scientists prove genetic bonds
politicians have statements for the people
we all like happy endings
what’s the hold up, make it one

Cold

Standard

I saw not the other side
bound by the vice in my head
temperature rising
as the nasal membrane drains
tears formulate in rushes
while the ears itch and clog
body drained of energy
for standing only brings vertigo
the throat of sand paper
guides the liquids as they flow
aching upsets the rest
part of the way to getting better
though I saw not the other side
